The Original MLS Power Rankings for the week of April 2, 2025

Now things seem to be settling in some. And we have our first coach fired in Peter Vermes. We will ask you to note that we said something about this in week one.

There were still some surprises, just not as many as last week.

Also, remember, points are important. But so is who the team played, and where they played. We value a road tie against a good team

Top Shelf

1. Inter Miami (Previously 1)

Another game, another win. What a machine. Obviously, a well-paid machine, but clearly the class of the league, no matter how you slice it. This time it was a 2-1 home win over Philadelphia.

2. Columbus Crew (3)

A road win, even 2-1 against D.C., is legit and keeps the Crew in the same group as Miami.

Quality

3. Minnesota United (4)

Winning 2-0 over RSL at home is an expected win as the Utah club is not in the top half of the league.

4. FC Cincinnati (5)

A 2-1 road win over Nashville is good. But for other prior stumbles, they might have moved up more.

5. Charlotte FC (2)

Maybe this is a tough drop, as Colorado does not suck, but losing 2-0 on the road to the Rapids is a mistake you can’t make at this part of the rankings.

6. Seattle Sounders (7)

This has been a bit atypical for the Sounders, but they do keep getting some good results and a 1-1 tie at San Jose keeps them buoyant.

7. Colorado Rapids (12)

A 2-0 home win over Charlotte is definitely a good result for the Rapids.

8. Vancouver Whitecaps (11)

Moving up in part because other teams struggled, as a 0-0 tie at Toronto is not something to write home about.

9. Atlanta United (14)

After trading initial goals, Atlanta fell behind 3-1 to NYCFC, only to fight back to win it 4-3 in front of the home fans. Definitely a gut check win against a very good team.

10. New York City FC (6)

Tumbled a bit due to the loss to Atlanta and other teams moving around. Maybe a bit harsh? Or maybe an expected adjustment?

11. Philadelphia Union (10)

Definitely a good team, but not elite, as evidenced by their 2-1 loss to Miami on the road.

12. Orlando City (13)

Nice little road win in LA as they defeated the inconsistent Galaxy, 2-1.

13. Los Angeles FC (9)

On the road at San Diego, LAFC found themselves down 3-0 before fighting back to within one, but couldn’t get the equalizer and ended up with a red card instead.

Good

14. New York Red Bulls (8)

Lose to a team that hadn’t won all season? Yeah, you are going to drop. True, it was only 2-1 and on the road to New England, but still not pretty.

15. FC Dallas (16)

A 2-1 home win over Sporting ends the season for Peter Vermes. It was obvious from Week One, but now it has finally happened. Credit to FCD for getting the job done.

16. San Diego FC (19)

Held off a really good LAFC team to win 3-2 in front of the home crowd. Starting off 3-0 does not suck.

17. Austin FC (21)

Not sure what to make of Nico’s new team, but they won 1-0 in St. Louis so that is definitely of note.

18. Chicago Fire (15)

A 1-1 home tie to Montreal is not exactly a good game. At least they didn’t lose.

19. Portland Timbers (23)

The Timbers have also been all over the place, but a 3-1 home win over the Dynamo is not bad at all, no matter how much Houston is playing these days.

20. LA Galaxy (17)

A 2-1 home loss to Orlando is definitely not the turnaround result they were looking for.

Questionable

21. St. Louis City SC (18)

They have seen good and bad seasons. So far 2025 is looking like the latter, and a 1-0 home loss to Austin is another brick in that wall.

22. Real Salt Lake (20)

A 2-0 loss at Minnesota is not a crushing defeat, but it isn’t a sign of life from a team that needs to start showing some soon.

23. Nashville SC (22)

Maybe losing 2-1 at home to Cincinnati isn’t all that bad, but that is not a sign of upward mobility.

24. CF Montreal (26)

Finding a way to tie Chicago 1-1 in the Windy City is at least some progress for this young side.

25. San Jose Earthquakes (25)

For a team that wants to play well for Il Bruce, a 1-1 home tie to Seattle is not the resume builder they were hoping for, but it also showed some grit. Can they build on it?

26. New England Revolution (28)

While it may not seem like a big move, getting out of the bottom bracket is a big change, thanks to their 2-1 win over the Red Bulls. Have they figured things out, or was it just one game?

Trash

27. Houston Dynamo (24)

The Dynamo have been very poor this season, and this most recent 3-1 loss to Portland is a sign that things may not get better soon.

28. D.C. United (27)

A 2-1 home loss to the Crew is just more proof that D.C. is not what it used to be, and work remains to even be mediocre.

29. Toronto FC (29)

So, at least they didn’t lose, but a 0-0 tie at home to Vancouver is not a sign things might turn around.

30. Sporting Kansas City (30)

For someone who coached in Kansas City for so long, it is the end of an era. At times, Sporting was truly elite, but they haven’t been of late, and losing 2-1 at FCD put the nail in Vermes’ coffin.
